We often think about the results and not the process.

Extruded plastic is ever-present in today’s world, but most people have no idea what it takes to produce extruded plastic pieces. The technology behind the process involves some of the most amazing techniques and intricate processes in the manufacturing industry.

There is a lot of technology that is involved in the plastic extrusion process. Understanding the polycarbonate extrusion process is helpful to companies that are considering requisitioning polycarbonate parts to be used for industries such as the automotive, construction and medical fields. Here’s a step-by-step primer on how polycarbonate materials can be extruded:

1. Beaded polycarbonate is loaded into the extrusion hopper.

At the beginning of the extrusion line is a hopper where polycarbonate materials can be loaded.  These can be one single type of material or even a blend of materials that offer the correct tensile strength and flexibility that is needed for the project.

2. The material enters the line through a single or dual screw process.

As the screw at the beginning of the line begins to turn, it brings in a measured amount of material to the extrusion process.  Along with heat, the screw uses friction in order to start to create a flexible plastic state where the material can be processed.

3. Polycarbonate material is forced through the die.

A metal die is the typical use for creating the shape.

4. Cooling and cutting finishes the project.

The parts are cooled and shaped using sizing systems along with air and/or water, and then cut into the required sizes prior to packing for delivery to the customer.
